Technology Spotlight: The Innovation Behind Intercept Technology™
Intercept Technology™ was developed in the mid-1980s by John Franey, a Bell Labs researcher focused on solving the problem of costly corrosion in telecom equipment. At the time, Franey was tasked with protecting delicate circuit packs crucial to the company’s technology. His work took an unexpected turn when he was asked to help restore the Statue of Liberty in 1986, ahead of its centennial celebration. Over the years, the statue’s copper sheathing had developed a green patina due to natural corrosion, which was both protective and aesthetically pleasing. However, leaks and water damage had caused internal corrosion that threatened the statue’s structural integrity.
Franey realized he could accelerate the natural patina process on new copper sheets to match the statue’s historic look. By "seeding" the new copper with the same crystal structure as the original patina, he was able to speed up the aging process and restore the statue without compromising its appearance. This insight into corrosion behavior didn’t just save the Statue of Liberty—it led to the development of a revolutionary material. Franey created a polymer that could inhibit corrosion and protect delicate items from atmospheric contaminants, which became the foundation for what is now known as Intercept Technology™.
